After a slow start of the season, PSG is finally looking as a team that belongs among the Top elite European clubs. They will certainly look to continue their positive streak on Wednesday night when they host the Swiss club Basel FC at Park des Princess.
Let it be clear, PSG is entering the UEFA Champions League with high ambitions. Although, on paper, they might look a bit weaker, comparing to their team from previous seasons, the rich French club hopes to finaly make that next step forward and reach the semi-finals at least. In the domestic competition, they were off to a slow start but manage to record a few consecutive wins and currently hold the 2nd position with a 4-point deficit behind the leaders Nice. In the first round of Group A, despite a great performance, they only managed to win 1 point against Arsenal, but bounced back to winning ways immediately in the 2nd round as they defeated Ludogorets away with 3:1. After the departure of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the coaching change when Laurent Blanc was replaced with Unai Emery, the PSG needed some time to adjust but it seems like they are finally finding their best form, especially Edinson Cavani, who has scored 12 goals for PSG in the season. At home the Uruguayan striker has found the net 4 times, and he will once again be the biggest threat for the visitors. Coach Unai Emery will not be able to count on the midfielder Javier Pastore and attacker Jese who are both out injured for this one.
Meanwhile, the Swiss side FC Basel is aware of its role in Group A and the strength of Arsenal and PSG, the two teams that are favorite to take the first 2 spots in the Group and qualify for the next round. However, this does not mean that Basel will travel to Paris with a mindset of losing the game. Basel is a well known team with a lot of European experience and has proven many times that they can perform perfectly against even bigger European teams. Entering the match against PSG with a lot of confidence gained during the domestic competition, where they hold the Top spot with 14 points advantage over the 2nd placed Lausanne. In 11 matches played in the domestic competition, Basel has recorded 10 wins and only 1 draw, without being defeat once. Coach Urs Fischer is aware that the Swiss competition is much different from the UEFA Champions league and that their success from the domestic league doesn’t mean anything when they face-off some of the biggest European teams. Seydou Doumbia could be the main threat for the PSG in this match. Center back Manuel Akanji, left back Adama Traore, and striker Andraz Sporar will be sidelined for the match against PSG on Wednesday.
PSG is catching the right form, and the one that their fans would like to see for the remainder of the season. On Wednesday night the Saints will come out strong and motivated to score early on trying to make a statement that they are still one of the best European teams. So far, PSG has been undefeated at home, and we expect it to stay like that. Basel, although an underdog in this match, could still find the back of the net once, but PSG will score more than twice in this game. With a win of PSG in this match, look for many goals as we predict that there will be at least 3 goals.
