It is time for round 2 of the UEFA Champions league.
Week two of the CL will showcase some truly interesting matchups, but our focus of this week is the game in Group B, between the Turkish powerhouse Besiktas FC and the Ukrainian Champions Dynamo Kiev.
Besiktas fans are extremely happy to see their team perform at home in the UEFA Champions league once again, after missing out on the competition six year in a row (2009/2010). The Turkish team has not seen a lot of success in the competition, failing to reach beyond the group stage in their last five appearances. Coach Senol Gunes has made sure to bring in some reinforcements this summer, after the departure of some key players like Mario Gomez, Jose Ernesto Sosa and Gokhan Tore. However, Vincent Aboubakar (Porto), Gokhan Gonul (Fenerbahce) and Caner Erkin (Inter Milan) are good enough to fully replace those players that left the team. In the opening game of the new Champions league season, Besiktas managed to bring home one point, after a 1:1 away draw against Benfica. During the weekend, Besiktas played a derby against Galatasaray at home (2:2) and it will be interesting to see if the Besiktas players have saved enough energy for the Wednesday clash. Against Dynamo Kiev, and in front of their frenetic fans, the Black Eagles should come out offensively, looking to score as soon as possible. Coach Gunes should have all of the key players available for the match.
Dynamo Kiev has seen a lot of roster changes this summer, as nine first-team players from last season left the team. On the other side, only two new players have joined the Ukrainian champions, creating a huge gap on the team’s bench. The lack of quality players is already starting to show its effect, as the team is already 6 points behind the Shakhtar Donetsk in the domestic league. The lack of squad depth was especially seen in the first round of the Champions league as the Ukrainian side lost at home 1:2 to Napoli. The team runs most of the offense through their biggest star – Andriy Yarmolenko, but looking at the current form and roster of the Ukrainian team, it seems that they are set to see the bottom of the Group B. However, Dynamo Kiev will travel to Istanbul in a good mood after recording a comfortable 4:0 away win again Olympik Donetsk. Coach Rebrov will be able to count on all of the players, except the Brazilian defender Danilo Silva, who is still out with a muscle injury.
These two teams have met each other 8 times previously. The Ukrainian team had more success, triumphing on five occasions, while Besiktas celebrated twice. Dynamo Kiev has had a lot of success in the European competitions, reaching the last 16 round during the 2015/2016 season. However, their unconvincing form in the domestic league and the lack of the squad depth are not giving the Ukrainian fans too much hopes to see their team repeat the last year’s success. On the other side, Besiktas is not giving away point that easily at their brand new Vodafone arena. Besiktas is by many considered a slight favorite in this match (Bet-at-Home has Besiktas at 2.14 favorite to win the match). The fans might not see an extremely beautiful match. However, we expect at least 2 goals.
Besiktas FC: Zengin – Beck, Marcelo, Tosic, Adriano – Inler, Hutchinson – Quaresma, Ozyakup, Erkin – Aboubakar
Dynamo Kiew: Shovkovsky – Antunes, Khacheridi, Vida, Makarenko – Tsygankov, Garmash, Rybalka, Sydorcuk- Yarmolenko, Moraes
The game will take place in Istanbul, Turkey at the Vodafone Arena on Wednesday, 28.09.2016. at 20:45 CET.
