As expected, Porto found the right momentum when most needed as they defeated the Club Brugge FC on Wednesday night at home with a 1:0 win!!!
Slowly, the Portuguese team is climbing up the spots in Group G as they are now holding the 2nd spot of the group with 7 points total and 3 points behind the leader of the group Leicester City FC.
The first real scoring chance on the night actually came from the visitors in the 26th minute when Wesley unleashed a fierce strike towards the goal but Iker Casillas was alert and on spot saving his goal with a nice save.
From that moment on it was all about Porto, who were constantly pushing forward and creating lovely attacks putting the visitor’s defense on their toes and not allowing them to relax.
It was Felipe (Porto) who tested the visitor’s keeper Ludovic Butelle in the 33rd minute of the match, with a nice shot from inside the box, which was directed low towards the middle of the goal. However, the home supporters have not waited too long before they saw their team come to a scoring chance once again in the 34th minute as Alex Telles took a mid-range free kick but his shot was denied by the crossbar, as the keeper was already beaten!!
The attacks just continued, and in the 37th minute the home side finally found the back of the net through Andre Silva who met the ball from the corner and planted it with a lovely header into the right side of the goal. It was the only goal of the first 45 minutes and it turned out to be the lone goal of the match.
The hosts have created several more scoring opportunities in the second half as Diogo Jota found some space inside the box in the 61st minute but failed to score. In the 64th minute Ruben Neves was not on mark as his shot went over the crossbar, but the biggest scoring chance in the 2nd half probably came in the 74th minute when Alex Telles fired shot from close range but his shot went just outside the right post.
The visitors tried their luck once again in the 85th minute as Tomas Pina fired a quick shot towards the middle of the goal but Iker Casillas was alert and denied the effort.
Although it was expected that Porto would manage to beat the visitors and collect another very important 3 points, the overall impression was that it could have been much better and that the game could have been more entertaining. What matters the most for the hosts is the fact that they took a big step to reviving their Champions league campaign and that they will be in a good position to decide their own destiny in the remaining 2 rounds.
On the other side, Club Brugge suffered yet another loss, their 4th of the campaign, and they sit now at the very bottom with 0 points to their name. They do have, however, slim chances of reaching the 3rd place, but many things would have to come together for that to happen!!!
