FC Sporting Lisbon vs Real Madrid Game Review

Real Madrid remained 2 points behind the top ranked Borussia Dortmund in group F, after coming out victorious on Tuesday night against the Sporting Lisbon FC with a 2:1 away win!!!

It seems that the Portuguese side remains a real challenge for the Los Blancos, after coming close of winning points against the Spaniards in both legs, in which they fell short both times with a 2:1 defeat.

However, Real Madrid can be more than happy with the late winner of Karim Benzema, who scored in the 87th minute of the match putting his team upfront with 2:1 and securing the knockout stage for his team.

The hosts failed to score on couple of promising scoring opportunities early on, while the visitors took some time to regroup and take the control of the ball. Ronaldo, who saw an emotional return to his former club, was the first to see the hosts’ goal with a snapshot in the first half, but his effort has not created significant threat.

However, the visitors were the first to find the back of the net as Ronaldo misfired his chance after a Real Madrid free kick, only to find Varane inside the box, who had no problems of sweeping the ball inside the goal from close range and putting his team in lead with 1:0 in the 29th minute.

The hosts came close to leveling the score only minutes later when Bruno Cesar’s effort was denied by one of the defenders in the 32nd minute. If it were not for Sergio Ramos, the ball would have most likely finished behind the keepers back. Bruno Cesar tried his luck once again in the 41st minute from a free kick, but his shot ended just wide off the right post. The end score after the first 45 minutes remained Sporting 0 – Real Madrid 1!!!

Sporting saw their chances of winning in this match reduced significantly when they were cut down to 10 men in the 64th minute of the match, after the referee showed the red card to Joao Pereira, who entered an off-the ball altercation with Mateo Kovacic. However, even with ten men on the pitch, Sporting managed to level the score in the 80th minute from the penalty spot that was awarded when Fabio Coentrao handled the ball inside his own box. Adrien Silva was on the spot to put his team back into the action and give them the hope that they could win all three points in the final 10 minutes.

The two teams exchanged the scoring opportunities, just before Real Madrid finally closed the game with three minutes to go, after Karim Benzema scored with a lovely header that finished into the bottom corner of Rui Patricio’s goal.

With this win, Real Madrid has kept their hopes alive of winning the group, while remaining undefeated in 30 games in all competition. Borussia Dortmund remains on top of the group with 13 points, with Real Madrid ranked 2nd with 11 points. Sporting is third with 3 points while Legia is at the bottom with 1 point.
