One of the more exciting games to watch on Matchday 2 of the competition was the matchup between Celtic and Manchester City.
The home team fans were eager to see if their team could bounce back on the right track after suffering the biggest European defeat in the clubs history away at Barcelona (0:7) in the first round.
On the contrary, the Manchester City Blues started their Champions league campaign like never before, defeating Borussia Monchengladbach 4:0 at home. Entering the 2nd round, City players and fans were hoping to continue their perfect start under their new boss Pep Guardiola.
The game barely started and the scoreboard showed Celtic 1-0 Manchester city. What a start for the home team it was. After a free kick awarded in the 3rd minute, the ball floated to the back post finding Forrest, who returned the ball inside the middle where Sviatchenko tried his luck with a nice header. However, the ball bounced of the chest of Moussa Dembele, who scored his 11th goal of the season.
In the 6th minute the home team came close of netting the 2nd goal, again after a set piece. However, the City goalie Bravo was much sharper this time and saved his goal after Toure fired a powerful strike towards the goal.
The visitors increased the pressure immediately, which paid off in the 11th minute. After creating a scoring opportunity through Kolarov, the ball was deflected and came right in the feet of Fernandinho, who was alert and scored the equalizing goal for his team.
In the 20th minute the home team came upfront once again. After creating some scoring chances, the fans at Celtic Park finally saw their team scoring the 2nd goal as Tierney used a unfortunate mistake by Sterling who saw the ball deflecting of his foot and ending behind Bravos back. As expected, the visitors, once again, pushed forward and created much more pressure. The home team have not enjoyed the lead for too long as Sterling corrected his mistake in the 28th minute, pulling of a lovely move inside the box before leveling the score 2 a piece.
As the first half was coming to its end, so did the pace of the game. Through almost the entire 45 minutes of the first half, the fans were able to enjoy a great performance by both teams, but the first half score remained 2:2.
The second half started off the same way the first half did, but this time it took only 2 minutes for the hosts to score and take the lead as Moussa Dembele used a sloppy mistake by Kolarov inside the box before firing a superb overhead kick past the back Manchester City goalkeeper.
City had a nice chance to level the score, ONCE AGAIN, in the 52nd minute after Gundogan executed a free kick perfectly but Gordon was alert and saved the goal. In the 55th minute the visitors combined a nice attack through Raheem Sterling, David Silva and Sergio Aguero, who found himself in a scoring opportunity from a close range. However, his shot was deflected by the goalkeeper, but unfortunately for the hosts, the ball bounced straight to Nolito, who had no problems of netting the ball into the empty side of the goal.
Entering the last 20 minutes, both teams seemed to be more cautious, as we saw more of the ball movement happening in the middle of the pitch.
Before the end of the match City saw two more open chances to score. Fernandinho tried his luck in the 83rd minute from just outside the box but his shot ended just over the bar. The fans at the Celtic Park saw one final scoring chance in the 1st minute of the added time as Gundogan fired a powerful shot from distance but his shot was perfectly saved by Gordon and the score remained 3:3.
Considering the devastating 0:7 loss to Barcelona in the first round, Celtic can be more than happy to end this game undefeated and winning at least 1 point.
After two rounds Barcelona leads Group C with a max 6 points, while City holds the 2nd place with 4 points. Celtic is 3rd with 1 point, while Borussia Monchengladbach holds the bottom spot of group with 0 points.
