Borussia Dortmund 1 – 0 Sporting Lisbon FC Game Review

Just over 66.000 of frenetic fans and supporters at the Signal Iduna Park, the hosts Borussia Dortmund faced off a hot rival, Sporting Lisbon.

It was actually a clash of two teams who like to push the ball forward and create some chances. However, Borussia Dortmund took the lead in the 12th minute as Matthias Ginter unleashed a nice cross into the box only to find Adrian Ramos who saw his first appearance.

The host continued to move forward and create fine looks towards the goal, but the visiting keeper Carwallho was on mark each time. Sporting created their first scoring chance in the 27th minute as Gelson Martins failed to do better from close range and wasted a nice opportunity for his team.

Next up it was the German side once again to be in a scoring opportunity. This time it was Christian Pulisic who’s shot from inside the box rattled the crossbar!!! It must be noted that Borussia opened the match in a great form and it was noticeable that they wanted to record a win against the visitors, at any cost.

Just as everyone expected the referee to signal the end of the first 45 minutes, the host saw another scoring opportunity in which Raphael Guerreiro was the main actor. Guerreiro was in a good position just inside the box, but his shot sailed inches wide of the left post. After the first 45 minutes the fans seemed to be enjoying the game. Borussia Dortmund wanted the win badly, but used a slow build-up game tactic in hope to find the back of the visitors net.

The second half kicked-off just as the first half has ended, with the hosting team still creating some space upfront and waiting for the opponent to make a mistake. It took a total of 76 minutes before any of the two teams saw an promising opportunity. Namely, Andre Schurrle released a promising shot towards the right corner. However the visiting keeper made a superb chance and that is why Dortmund failed to score even more goals on the match.

Only 2 minutes later, Bryan Ruiz (Sporting) found himself inside the box, unfortunately for him his shot ended narrowly over the crossbar.

It turned out to be the last big scoring chance of the match, as both teams slowed down the pace significantly and it seemed that both teams would be satisfied with winning 1 point.

In the conclusion, we can say that we have seen an attractive offensive game in which the home side dominated the game for the most part of the it, and absolutely deserved the 3 points.

With 4 round down in the Group F, the standings are as following:

  1. Dortmund – 10
  2. Real Madrid – 10
  3. Sporting – 3
  4. Legia – 1
