Atletico 2-1 Madrid Rostov review

Griezmann last minute injury time goal will be a subject of many discussions. Whether it was offside or not, this goal was controversial for Russian team fans. Even Antoine Griezmann himself wasn’t celebrating the goal, in the beginning, thinking it must have been disallowed, but when referee Craig Tompson showed towards the center of the pitch, French striker started smiling and run to his teammates and coach on the bench. This was a hard match for Atletico, like in Rostov they had many chances but weren’t efficient as they should, but luck was on their side this night. Unlike them, Rostov players have played as best as they could, but maybe the crucial one point for their Europa League dream had been lost in the last seconds of the match.
The first shot had been seen in the 8th minute of the game. Torres passed the ball to Carrasco and Belgian shot from the left side into the box, but high over the bar.
14th minute and Rostov announce their intentions, not to go home without a fight. Christian Noboa made a solid shot from the middle of the box, some 22 meters from the goal, but Oblak saved that one.
Three minutes later, Griezmann received long ball on the flank of the right side, and he rushed alone to the counter-attack, putting the ball trough legs of one defender, going on other, then passing the ball to Carrasco, who goes into the box, and in full speed tries to round goalkeeper but when he shots, opponent defender blocks the shot.
Exactly ten minutes later, Atletico managed to take a lead.
Carrasco sent high trough ball, into the middle of the box, and Griezmann reacted like a true striker, extending as much as he could and putting the ball into the net of helpless Dzhanaev. The real beauty for French striker.

But Atletico fans didn’t stop applauding, when Sardar Azomun, the “Iranian Messi” equalized. Dimitry Poloz ran with the ball, trough the middle , passed to the right to Azomun who elegantly puts the ball in the left side of the net beside Oblak.

That was a real surprise. Nobody expected that.
Atletico then pushed harder. They obtained the ball in their possession, trying to find Torres, Carrasco and Griezmann upfront. In the 41st minute, Vrsaljko sends the long cross ball from the right side, and Torres needed jus an inch or two to score.
Then 45th minute, a ricochet in the Rostov box, the ball was deflecting until it reached to Felipe Luiz on the left side of the goalkeeper area, he shoots, but he was blocked.
Soon first half ended, but it was just annunciation of the Atletico’s attacking in the following period.
Immediately they started attacking, Koke 47th minute, after Carrasco’s free kick, but Dzhanaev saves.
Torres passes into the box in the next attack but no one was there !!
55th minute, Torres with a header and imagine that kind of pressure from 52nd until 66th minute 5 corner kicks for Atletico have been awarded.
Simeone brought in Correa and Gameiro to refresh attacking line, but nothing. Rostov players stalled the game, with stimulating and slowing down the tempo, and they were good as if they are an Italian team, not Russian. Dzhanaev received yellow card because of stalling.
And then when everything seemed lost for Atletico, long cross ball, on the edge of the box it deflected off Gatcan and went straight to Griezmann, who excellently resolves the situation, from near, showing why is he one of the best strikers in the world.
As we said, first no one thought it was a goal, even Griezmann himself, but referee Tompson after consulting with his assistant shows the center. Rostov players were complaining, but nothing helped. After this, they were both furious and devastated. But when looking at the replay, we can clearly see that Rostov defender was the last one who played with the ball.
After this match, Atletico is still 4 out of 4 and is on top of the group D, in front of Bayern Munich with three points more. Their clash in Munich will probably decide who will win this group, as both teams have already qualified for the next stage.
Rostov had excellent chance to improve their chances of qualifying for Europa League with this point. Now they have to either defeat PSV in Eindhoven or to make a draw and then to depend on the goal difference.
Man of the match, of course, Antoine Griezmann. Two-time scorer was excellent, not only did he scored two goals, but he managed to create a number of chances for his teammates, and he also showed excellent reflexes, because, to be honest, both of his goals aren’t product of some actions or team plays, but more of his instinct and individual skills. Atletico has a treasure in this player.

From Madrid for tonight, that is all. All the best, and watch Champions League.
