Wednesday night featured 8 more game of Week 2 of the most elite club competition – The UEFA Champions League!!!
Our focus tonight was the very interesting clash between Arsenal and Basel. Both teams have entered the match after a 1:1 draw in their opening rounds. Arsenal kicked off their 2016/2017 campaign after winning a point away at Park de Princes against PSG (1:1). The „Gunners“ knew that they would have a tough match against PSG, who was a much better team, but the final score remained 1:1 and the Gunners returned home satisfied.
On the other side, Basel was always an uncomfortable opponent as the Swiss teams has gained a lot of European experience, becoming almost a regular participant of the Champions league group stage. Unfortunately for the Basel fans, their team „only“managed to win 1 point against the outsiders Ludogorets Razgrad on Match day 1.
As expected, the Gunners came out fiercely, displaying some blistering pace upfront and it seemed like Basel was having troubles of keeping up with it. The fans at the Emirates Stadium didn’t have to wait too long for a GOAL as Alexis Sanchez provided a lovely cross in the middle only to see Theo Walcott connecting with a header and planting the ball behind the goalkeepers back. After conceding a goal, the visitors saw more possession of the ball but failed to create a real scoring chance.
Just as the fans thought that Basel was back in the game, Arsenal doubled its lead to 2:0 in the 26th minute, once again through Theo Walcott, who combined passes with Sanchez, before scoring from the penalty area.
After scoring their 2nd goal of the night, the Gunners never slowed down. In contrast, they pushed forward even harder creating scoring chances in the 33rd, 36th, 38th and 41st minute.
It was really a wonder how the first half remained only 2:0 as the Gunners had created plenty of scoring opportunities.
The players of both teams started the second half on the same note that the 1st half ended as the Gunners wanted to score a 3rd goal and end all hopes for the visitors.
In the 62nd minute we finally saw some movement of the visiting team as Bjarnason directed a curling shot towards the goal, only to see Ospina deflect the shot over the bar. Basel created another chance in the 64th minute and it was clear that the visitors were growing in confidence.
Arsenal continued to control the ball possession, but it was clearly noticeable that the intensity was slowing down entering the last 10 minutes of the match. Although the hosts should have been up by at least three goals, after creating plenty of chances, the final score stayed 2:0 and we can only congratulate Arsenal on their first win of the new Champions league season.
The audience at the Emirates Stadium has truly enjoyed a great game that displayed plenty of scoring chances.
With this win, Arsenal shares the 1st place with PSG. Both teams have collected 4 points after the first two rounds. Ludogorets and Basel are holding the 3rd and 4th spot of Group A with only 1 point each.
